2018 SUSTAINABILITY WEEK AT UCI
The 8th Annual Empowering Sustainability Gathering will occur during the Sustainability Week at the University of California, Irvine, July 16-20, 2018. Although the gathering is attended by invited fellows, there are several activities and events open to the public on July 16, 17, 18, and 19. They are all free, but space is limited and rsvps are requested to the Newkirk Center for Science and Society.
PRESENTATIONS BY UCI SUSTAINABILITY FELLOWS
The day-long program consists of presentations by invited sustainability fellows from the United States and across the world. They are emerging leaders of sustainability working as academics, practitioners, and activists in governments, private, and non-profit institutions. Among others, members of the group have been involved in efforts to rethink food systems in India, Hungary, Haiti, and Mozambique; to protect biodiversity in Costa Rica, Brazil, Chile, and Mexico; to address climate change through grassroots efforts in the United States; to develop new monetary systems; to implement new models of leadership; and to foster environmental education. Content focus on "Empowering Sustainability in Fragile States" with a focus on the troubled Middle East. This will be the second program in the Empowering Sustainability in Fragile States Initiative. The first conference was held in Moscow, Russia from December 11, 2017 through December 16, 2017. It was hosted by the School of World Politics at Moscow State University, the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and the Russian International Affairs Council in addition to UC Irvine.

Gary Griggs is a Distinguished Professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz and a leading international expert on coastal resilience, the effects of stronger storms and higher tides, and the practical opportunities for coastal cities and regions in the coming years in addressing seal-level rise.
